The hotel is a city centre, budget hotel with a mix of a modern interior and vintage exterior, located in the Jewellery Quarter, around 15 mins walking distance from Birmingham City centre. There is a bus service at the front of the hotel and Tram service (St Paul’s Station) at the back, both within easy 5 min walking. Very convenient for seeing and doing things in the City or for an evening out without an expensive Taxi bill.
The hotel is located in a commercial neighbourhood and the staff at front desk were efficient, but not really helpful when it came to questions about parking which is the main down side of this hotel. We later discovered that there is up to 4 hrs free parking in surrounding streets (if you dare leave your car on the streets overnight), but you’ll have to lug your luggage around the streets to the hotel. There is also a Pay & Display car park round the corner, (£6/24hrs), however it does not look that secure, so if you have a really nice car, go for the nearby NCP car park (£20+/24hrs).
Our room was ok, shower pressure a bit low, reasonable room size and comfy bed, however sofa bed was not made up when we arrived at 7pm, so we had to sort out the linen and make it up ourselves. Room seemed clean but we did find a pair of specs under the bed, probably from previous occupant, so you have to wonder about thoroughness of house-keeping ? Windows don’t open, so room can feel a bit stuffy with a family of 4, as climate control is not that responsive.
In the morning, beware the tiny lifts can be slow and breakfast can be very busy if you get up late. Basic buffet service, with limited hot options and usual cereal/pastries – nothing spectacular, (you get more with Premier Inn), however remember that it is complimentary.
The gym is in the basement, small but functional with a low ceiling, way too low to stretch freely with weighted hands (I’m 6′ 2″ and could easily touch the ceiling), also there are no changing rooms, however there is cold filtered water and towels available.
Overall, for the price and location its not bad, reasonable value for money and the midday checkout is great, however if you are driving for your own peace of mind, recommend that you pay a bit extra and find a hotel with parking.
